Sukjong Kim
After completing a bachelor of art degree in orchestra conducting (under Chi-Yong Chung) in Korea National University of Arts, Conducting Department, Sukjong Kim had pursued a bachelor’s degree in conducting (under Ulrich Windfuhr) at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg since 2019 and has been pursuing a master’s degree since 2023. In the same year 2023, she studied under Maestro Marin Alsop through the student exchange program at Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University.
This year, she was invited by Maestro Daniele Gatti to participate in the 2024 Chigiana Academy, where she won the Special Award for Female Conductors. In addition, she was selected as one of the six finalists at the world-renowned 11th Fitelberg International Conducting Competition and went into the semi-finals at JM Bucharest International Conducting Competition in 2021.
And, she was also selected as a member of ‘Conductor Forum’, the German Music Association under Ministry of Culture in Germany, to conduct Nürnberg Symphoniker, Hofer Symphoniker, Symphoniker Hamburg, Bergisch Symphoniker, Theater Lüneburg, Philharmonisches Orchester Giessen and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
She was also interested in the modern music field, so she participated as an assistant to maestro Rudiger Bohn in the Autumn International Contemporary Music Festival held in Warsaw, Poland in 2022, and she conducted the performance where Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Franz Liszt Academy of Music and University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna collaborated for the Ligeti 100th Anniversary in Budapest, Hungary.
She was invited by Maestro Simone Young to participate in the Critical Orchestra Master Class held in Berlin, where she was selected as a finalist by the orchestra members. In addition, she participated in Master Class by Maestro Johannes Schlaefli to conduct Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in Austria, and she has studied under prominent conductors including Marin Alsop, Christian Ehwald, Jonathan Darlington, Zygmunt Thorpe, Marcello Bufalini, Florian Ludwig, etc.
Before studying abroad in Germany, she was selected as a new conductor by the Korea Conductors Association in 2016 and 2017 consecutively to make her debut with Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra and since then, she has conducted Gangnam Symphony Orchestra, Chuncheon Philharmonic Orchestra and Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra including the 1st Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra Next Generation Concert.
