Colin Metters

Colin Metters' career as conductor and conducting pedagogue has taken him all over the world.  His wide experience affords him an enviable reputation across a broad spectrum of the music profession. He has conducted many of the leading orchestras in the UK and conducted extensively abroad including Poland, Spain, Greece, Australia, Singapore, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Netherlands, New Zealand, Vietnam, Korea and the Baltic States. He also has considerable experience in the theatre, conducting opera galas and working with many leading dance and ballet companies including Australian Ballet at Sydney Opera House, Netherlands Dance Company, Cape Town Ballet, Ballet Rambert and New York City Ballet conducting programmes of Bernstein, Stravinsky and Schoenberg at the Lincoln Center, New York.

In 1983 he founded the Conductors' Course at the Royal Academy of Music in London, “...to establish and direct a conducting programme to be internationally pre-eminent”.  During his 30 years as Head of Conducting Studies the course became recognised internationally as one of the  foremost conductor training programmes  -  mentioned by the New York Times in an international review of music conservatoires as “world renowned”.

Colin Metters has taught in conservatoires in Helsinki, Chicago, Beijing, St Petersburg, Weimar, Sydney, Cracow, Michigan and New York; and given international  masterclasses in Berlin, Belgrade, Moscow, Dubrovnik, Vilnius, Liepaja and St Petersburg.

He has served on the jury for a number of international competitions including the 5th Prokofiev Competition in St Petersburg, the 4th International Violin Competition in Qingdao, China, a number of juries for the Dirigentenforum in Germany, the Atlantic Coast International Conducting Competition in  Portugal and the Matacic International Conducting Competition in Zagreb.

Colin Metters continues to enjoy an international freelance career as conducting pedagogue and mentor working with aspiring conductors from all over the world.  He is Emeritus Professor of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, gives masterclasses each term at the  Royal College of Music, and has given masterclasses at the Music Academy in Cracow as visiting Professor of Conducting.
